Why Los Angeles Homeowners Choose Ameristar Construction

Ameristar equipment is common across Los Angeles rooftops and side yards, and Rowan Construction Group provides independent Ameristar service in Los Angeles for the M1, M2, and M4 series plus 80% AFUE gas furnaces. We’re not factory-authorized, and that matters: our diagnosis follows the failure pattern, not a sales script. Los Angeles homeowners call us because the fix gets priced in writing before we pick up a tool, every time. You can reach us at (470) 298-9650.

Call (470) 298-9650

What you’ll find on this page that you won’t get from a manufacturer’s spec sheet: the actual failure modes these units develop in Los Angeles coastal air and San Fernando Valley heat, the OEM-versus-aftermarket parts trade-off in plain dollars, and the repair-or-replace math our technicians walk through out loud. Grant Rowan grew up in the Crenshaw district and trained in construction technology at Los Angeles Trade-Technical College, and the discipline he runs this company with is simple: measure twice, say it once, show your work.

Why Trust Rowan Construction Group for Your Ameristar Construction?

Our technicians work on Ameristar rooftop units and split systems regularly. We know the M1 series is a single-stage basic AC that shows capacitor degradation around the five-to-seven-year mark in Los Angeles, sooner within a mile or two of the coast where salt air pits contacts. We know the M2 heat pump runs into formicary corrosion on evaporator coils, a specific kind of pinhole leak that micro-channels through copper when airborne formic acid from household chemicals and LA smog meets condensation on the coil. We know the M4’s defrost control board fails in ways that only show up on cold winter nights, when the unit needs to reverse and doesn’t.

That familiarity means our diagnostic time is short and our written price is honest. We don’t inflate a quote to cover uncertainty we don’t actually have. Under Clause 1 of The Haven Standard, the price is written before anyone starts. The estimate you receive is a flat number with a written scope and a written warranty attached. Since 2007, across 4,000-plus projects, our changes have required a signed change order before any work proceeds, and that discipline is why our final invoices land within a few percent of the agreed price.

Every visit includes a documented photo record of what we found and what we did. Background-checked, uniformed technicians. A live person answers the phone 24/7. These are not upgrades.

Common Ameristar Construction Problems We Fix in Los Angeles

Common Ameristar Construction Problems We Fix in Los Angeles
  • Capacitor failures on M1 condenser units. The dual-run capacitor on an M1 condenser sees the worst of a Los Angeles summer. Between coastal corrosion in Santa Monica and Palms and the five-month heat load in the Valley, a 35/5 µF capacitor that should last a decade will pock and swell in five to seven years. The symptom is a condenser that hums but won’t start, or short-cycles every few minutes. We replace with OEM capacitors when available.
  • Evaporator coil leaks on M2 heat pumps. Formicary corrosion is the quiet killer here. The M2’s copper evaporator sits wet all summer, and Los Angeles air carries enough formic acid from vehicle emissions and household cleaners to etch pinhole channels through the coil wall. The system loses refrigerant a pound or two at a time, runs longer, and cools less. We pressure-test with nitrogen to confirm the leak location before quoting a repair or replacement.
  • Defrost control board failures on M4 heat pumps. The M4 uses an electronic defrost board that controls both the reversing valve and the auxiliary heat relay. When that board fails, the symptom is erratic: the heat pump runs fine for an hour, then blows cold air, then the strips don’t kick on. Los Angeles homeowners notice this on the first genuinely cold night in December or January. Board replacement is straightforward and we stock the common replacements.
  • Blower motor overheating on 80% AFUE furnaces. Los Angeles has weak filter discipline in a lot of homes, because the furnace shares an air handler with the AC and the filter gets forgotten between seasons. A clogged filter raises static pressure, the blower motor works harder, and the limit switch trips. The furnace shuts down in the middle of a cold snap. Sometimes it’s the motor; often it’s the filter. We check both before quoting anything.
  • Drain pan and condensate line failures across all Ameristar models. In LA’s dry season, the condensate line isn’t the problem. It’s the season when the unit never stops running, and the constant condensate cycle breeds algae in the line faster than homeowners expect. A backed-up line trips the float switch, the unit shuts off, and a homeowner assumes the compressor died. We clear lines, flush with an antimicrobial, and verify the float switch functions before leaving.

Ameristar Parts & Our Repair-vs-Replace Approach

We use genuine Ameristar OEM capacitors, contactors, and defrost control boards when availability and lead time allow. These are the parts where the manufacturer’s tolerances matter most, especially on the control side. For universal components like blower motors and thermostats, we install proven aftermarket equivalents. A universal ECM blower motor from a reputable manufacturer costs $180 to $350 less than the OEM equivalent and carries the same warranty length. That savings goes into your written quote.

Our repair-versus-replace rule is simple and we say it out loud: any Ameristar unit under 12 years old gets repaired unless the compressor is burnt out or the coil leak is unreachable. A burnt compressor has failed mechanically, not gradually, and refrigerants have migrated through the system in ways that make patchwork repairs false economy. An unreachable coil leak on an M2 heat pump, buried in a cabinet designed for factory assembly, is the same math. At that point we give you straight replacement numbers, not a persuasive speech.

For everything else, the repair gets priced first. Call (470) 298-9650 and we’ll put the number in writing before any work begins.

Our Ameristar Service Process - Step by Step

Our Ameristar Service Process - Step by Step
  1. 1
Diagnosis on site. We test the Ameristar unit under load where possible, check refrigerant pressures and superheat/subcooling on AC and heat pump calls, and document the condition of the capacitor, contactor, coil, and electrical connections with photos. If it’s a furnace call, we check gas pressure, flame sensor, and the limit switch sequence. The diagnosis is included in the visit fee and your written quote covers any repair.
  2. 2
Written quote before work. We hand you a flat price with a written scope and a written warranty. No verbal numbers, no “we’ll see when we get in there.” If the job changes, a signed change order comes first.
  3. 3
Repair or installation. Parts go in per manufacturer spec. For rooftop work, we carry fall protection gear as standard. For furnace and heat pump electrical work, we verify amperage draw and static pressure after the repair, not just that the unit turns on.
  4. 4
Testing and verification. On AC calls in Los Angeles summer, we measure supply air temperature at the register and confirm it’s within the expected drop. On heat pump calls, we force a defrost cycle to verify the board and reversing valve respond. On furnace calls, we run the full cycle and listen to the flame ignition. You receive the photo record before we leave.
