Wellborn Driveway & Pavers: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide
Wellborn driveway and paver components in Los Angeles typically cost between $4,130 and $21,240 installed, depending on whether you’re replacing edge restraints, a section of pavers, or the entire driveway surface. We stock Wellborn-compatible paver profiles and edge systems on our trucks, and most section replacements are completed in a single day. Owners usually discover a paver failure the way you’d notice a loose tooth: a corner clicks underfoot, a paver rocks where it never rocked before, or water pools in a spot that used to drain clean.
Los Angeles soil is the quiet culprit behind most driveway paver failures we see. The clay-heavy ground in neighborhoods like Mid-Wilshire and Baldwin Hills expands when winter rains arrive, then contracts through the dry months, shifting the sand bed beneath your pavers by fractions of an inch at a time. Over three to five years, those fractions add up to visible sagging, lippage between adjacent pavers, and edge restraints that pull away from the border. The good news is that paver driveways are modular: you replace the failed section, not the whole system, in most cases.
Rowan Construction Group is an independent contractor, not affiliated with Wellborn. We work with Wellborn-compatible materials because homeowners in Los Angeles deserve a written price and a documented record for every driveway repair, not a guess.
Which Wellborn Models This Applies To
Wellborn’s driveway and paver line splits into two broad families: the Estate Series, which uses a 60mm-thick paver body with a chamfered top edge, and the Metro Series, which runs thinner at 50mm and uses a squared profile. The distinction matters because edge restraints, joint sand, and base compaction depths differ between the two. If you’re replacing a single paver in an Estate Series driveway, a Metro paver will sit noticeably lower and create a trip edge.
Identifying your Wellborn paver is a matter of looking at the side profile. Flip one paver over or check the exposed edge: a chamfered top edge with a distinct bevel means Estate Series. A clean, square top edge means Metro Series. Color codes are stamped on the underside of most Wellborn pavers as a two- or three-letter code, like CH for Charcoal or SD for Sandstone. If the stamp has worn off, bring a loose paver to our Los Angeles yard and we’ll match the profile and color under daylight, because warehouse lighting lies to you about color.
On the OEM-versus-aftermarket question: Wellborn’s OEM pavers are manufactured to a tight color-batch tolerance, but older driveways have already faded from UV exposure. A brand-new OEM paver next to a five-year-old field will look like a patch. We often recommend a quality aftermarket equivalent that we can color-match to the existing weathered surface, which looks better in the short term and costs 15 to 20 percent less than OEM. If you’re under a builder warranty, OEM is the right call and we’ll document the part numbers for your claim.
Signs Your Wellborn Driveway & Pavers Is Failing

- Rocking or clicking pavers underfoot. The sand bed beneath the paver has eroded or compacted unevenly, usually from water intrusion through a failed joint. Left alone, the paver’s edges will start chipping against its neighbors every time a car rolls over it.
- Water pooling in flat spots that used to shed water. This points to base settlement rather than surface wear. In Los Angeles, it often traces back to a broken sprinkler line or a downspout that’s been dumping water at the driveway edge for a season or two.
- Edge restraints pulling away from the paver border. Edge restraints, the plastic or aluminum strips that hold the outside course of pavers in line, fail when the base spreads under vehicle weight. Once the restraint lets go, the outer pavers start drifting outward within weeks.
- White, chalky residue across the paver surface. This is efflorescence, mineral salts migrating up through the paver body as moisture evaporates. It’s cosmetic rather than structural, but in Los Angeles it shows up most often on driveways that have been sealed with the wrong type of sealer for our climate.
- Gaps between pavers wider than the width of a nickel. Joint sand has washed out, which means the pavers are now bearing on each other directly instead of through the sand cushion. Every car pass grinds paver edges against paver edges until you see spalling.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
Section replacement for a Wellborn driveway in Los Angeles runs from $4,130 for a small paver patio repair up to $12,980 for a larger section of the driveway, with full driveway replacement landing between $5,900 and $16,520. Concrete driveway work sits in the $5,310 to $14,160 range, and asphalt paving runs $4,130 to $10,620. For driveway sealing, expect $295 to $825. The price range is driven by three factors: how much of the base has failed, how many pavers need to be pulled and reset, and whether the edge restraint system needs to be replaced.
Every quote includes parts, labor, base repair, joint sand, and compaction, written as one flat number. You’ll get a written scope before we start, a signed change order before any work changes, and a photo record of the substrate condition before we put the new pavers down. Under Clause 1 of the Haven Standard, the written price comes before any work starts. That’s not a courtesy, it’s the whole arrangement.
Warranty on the work runs 365 days under the Done Right Promise: if it’s not done right, we make it right. The pavers themselves carry the manufacturer’s material warranty, which we’ll document in writing for your records.
DIY or Call Us?

What you can safely do yourself: check whether the problem is localized by walking the driveway in a grid and marking every paver that rocks or sounds hollow when tapped with a rubber mallet. Take photos of those spots, plus any areas where water pools. That’s the information we need for an accurate written quote, and it costs you nothing but twenty minutes.
Where DIY goes wrong: pulling pavers without checking the base. If you lift a paver and the sand underneath is dark, wet, or smells like soil, you have a drainage problem that resetting the surface won’t fix. Compacted base with the wrong depth is the reason most DIY paver repairs sink again within six months. The work itself isn’t high-tension or dangerous, but it’s heavy, it’s detail work, and getting the slope wrong means water running toward your foundation instead of away from it. If you want a trained set of eyes on it, call (470) 298-9650 and we’ll walk the driveway with you.
FAQs
Wellborn driveway pavers in Los Angeles typically last 20 to 30 years as a surface, but the sand joints and edge restraints need attention every 5 to 7 years. The paver body itself doesn’t wear out; the system around it does. Call (470) 298-9650 if you’re seeing joint washout or edge drift. The estimate is free.
Yes, and that’s the usual path. We lift the affected pavers, correct the base and sand bed, reset the pavers, and re-sand the joints. Full replacement only makes sense when the base itself has failed or the paver profile is no longer manufactured. Call (470) 298-9650 and we’ll tell you which situation you’re in, with a written price either way.
Most section repairs are done in one day, from pulling the old pavers to compacting the new base to final joint sand. Larger jobs, where the base has to be excavated and rebuilt, run two to three days. You’ll get the timeline in writing before we start, and no change happens without a signed change order.
We keep the most common Wellborn Estate and Metro profiles in stock at our Los Angeles yard, along with edge restraints and polymeric sand for our climate. If your color code or profile is unusual, we can usually source it within a week. We’ll confirm availability when you call (470) 298-9650, before you commit to anything.
