CertainTeed Windows & Doors: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide
If you have a CertainTeed window or door with a failed sash, worn weatherstripping, cracked glass, or a broken operator, we stock and install the parts to bring it back to working order. In Los Angeles, an installed replacement part for a CertainTeed unit typically runs $130 to $780 depending on whether it’s a balance, latch, crank, hinge, or insulated glass pack. Most parts jobs take under two hours on site once the correct component is matched to your series. The usual discovery is unglamorous: a window that won’t stay up, a patio door that grinds, a latch that no longer catches, or condensation fogged between the panes where the seal has failed.
Which CertainTeed Models This Applies To
CertainTeed has produced several window and door series over the years: the Bryn Mawr, New Haven, and Norwood single-hung and double-hung lines, plus the CertainTeed patio door and sliding door systems common in Los Angeles homes built between the mid-1980s and late 2000s. The fastest way to identify your unit is to check the spacer bar inside the glass, the hinge, or the balance shoe for an etched or stamped manufacturer code. Model labeling can also live on the top edge of the sash or on the head of the frame, often obscured by paint after years of repainting.
Here’s the compatibility gotcha we see every month in Los Angeles: CertainTeed used different balance systems in different production runs. A New Haven window from 1992 may take a coil balance, while the same model from 1999 uses a block-and-tackle balance. They are not interchangeable, even within the same series. That’s why we remove and measure the existing component before ordering anything. For locks, hinges, and operators, a quality aftermarket part from a manufacturer like Prime-Line or Wright Products often matches the OEM spec at 40% to 60% of the CertainTeed-branded price. For balances, glazing bead, and extruded vinyl parts, we prefer OEM or exact-profile aftermarket because a 1/8-inch profile difference means the part won’t seat.
We’re an independent Los Angeles service provider, not affiliated with CertainTeed. We do not label something “OEM” unless the part comes from a CertainTeed-authorized supply channel and we can show you the packaging. When we use a production-equivalent aftermarket part, we say so on the written line item, with the brand and part number.
Signs Your CertainTeed Windows & Doors Is Failing

- The window won’t stay open, or slams shut. The balance has lost tension or the shoe has slipped out of the jamb channel. On CertainTeed double-hungs, we see this more often on windows facing west in Los Angeles, where afternoon heat on the vinyl accelerates coil fatigue.
- Condensation inside the glass, between the panes. The insulating glass unit seal has failed. In Southern California, the issue isn’t cold weather; it’s prolonged UV exposure degrading the butyl seal, particularly on unshaded south and west walls.
- The sash drags, binds, or jumps when operated. A worn pivot bar or a bent balance channel. Los Angeles homes settle, and a 1/8-inch frame rack over twenty years is enough to change how the sash sits.
- The patio door grinds or takes both hands to move. CertainTeed sliding doors rode on steel rollers, and those roller assemblies seize when the bearings flatten from years of dirt and dry cycles. The track may also be worn into a groove, which replacement rollers alone won’t fix.
- The casement crank spins freely, or the locking points no longer reach. The operator gear has stripped, or the tie bar connecting the locking points has broken. Both are common on CertainTeed casement units now twenty-plus years old, especially when prior owners kept cranking a stiff sash instead of addressing the hinge.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
Here’s what an installed CertainTeed part costs in Los Angeles:
- Sash balance replacement (per sash): $130 to $310 installed, including both balances and the shoe.
- Insulated glass unit replacement (thermal pane): $280 to $780 installed, depending on size and Low-E spec.
- Sliding door roller assembly (per door): $180 to $420 installed, including cleaning and aligning the track.
- Casement crank, lock, and operator set: $210 to $510 installed.
- Weatherstripping and seal package (per window): $95 to $240 installed.
- Latch, handle, and keep for patio doors: $90 to $260 installed.
The range comes from part availability, glass size, whether the sash needs to come out for the repair, and whether we’re matching an existing finish. The written quote you get before work starts breaks down part cost and labor separately. You see what the part costs, what it costs to install it, and what the warranty covers. No lump sum, no “parts and labor” trick. Our 365-Day Done Right Promise applies after the install: if the part fails within a year and it’s a defect or an installation error, we replace it at no charge.
DIY or Call Us?

What you can safely do: clean the track, inspect the weatherstripping, note the model code we described above, and photograph the failed part before calling us. What you should not DIY: removing an insulated glass unit, extracting a vinyl sash from its frame, or working on a balance with residual tension. Vinyl frame channel tolerances are unforgiving, and forcing a sash back in can crack the frame corner, at which point you’re replacing the whole window rather than the part. Same with patio door glass: an IG unit is heavy, and unweighting it wrong damages the frame permanently. This is not a warning about your competence. It’s a warning about the cost of a cracked vinyl frame.
If you’ve identified the part and want it done, call (470) 298-9650. We’ll ask for your model code, a photo of the failed part, and the rough size, then give you a written number before anyone comes out.
FAQs
CertainTeed vinyl windows installed in Los Angeles generally provide 20 to 30 years of service before major components like balances, seals, and rollers need replacement, and the thermal glass seal is often the first thing to fail at the 12-to-18-year mark because of UV exposure on south and west faces. We commonly see windows from the 1990s that are structurally fine but need three or four parts replaced, which usually costs far less than a full window replacement.
It depends on the part. A balance can sometimes be re-tensioned rather than replaced, a roller can be cleaned and lubricated if the bearing hasn’t flattened, and a latch can be adjusted if the keep has shifted. Once gears are stripped, seals are fogged, or vinyl has cracked, replacement is the only honest fix. Call us at (470) 298-9650 and we’ll tell you which path you’re on before recommending any work.
A typical balance, roller, or latch replacement takes 45 minutes to two hours once the correct part is on site, and most jobs are completed in a single visit.
We carry common balances, rollers, locks, and weatherstripping for certain series in our Los Angeles service vehicles, but parts are often series-specific and may need to be ordered for your production year. We order with the exact model code and measurements when it’s a special-order item.
