Tamko Driveway & Pavers: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide
We stock and install Tamko-compatible driveway and paver parts across Los Angeles, with typical replacement work landing between $826 and $2,124 for a localized repair, and full paver driveway installation at $8,260-$21,240. Most Tamko owners call us after a section of pavers has shifted, a sand joint has washed out after a heavy winter rain, or the edge restraint has begun to fail at the driveway apron. The underlying cause is almost never the paver itself - it’s what sits beneath it.
Tamko’s paver line is built around a modular interlocking system. The pavers themselves rarely crack under normal residential loads; what fails is the bedding layer, the edge restraint, or the drainage plane underneath. When we walk a Tamko driveway in Los Angeles, we look at the base before we look at the surface. A paver that has dropped half an inch is telling you something about the aggregate underneath it, not about the paver.
Which Tamko Models This Applies To
Tamko’s driveway and paver products fall into two groups: their larger-format driveway pavers (typically 60mm and 80mm thickness) and their thinner 30mm-40mm patio pavers. The driveway pavers are what we see most often on Los Angeles properties, because they’re engineered to carry intermittent vehicle weight. The patio pavers show up on walkways, pool decks, and side-yard paths.
Here’s the compatibility gotcha most owners miss: a 60mm paver cannot be swapped for an 80mm paver without reworking the bedding layer underneath. The two thicknesses require different base depths, and mixing them on a driveway will show leveling failures within the first rainy season. If you have a partial replacement, you need the original thickness. To identify yours, pull one paver near the edge and check its side profile. Tamko stamps a series code on the underside of most production runs. Match that series before you order.
On the OEM versus aftermarket decision: Tamko no longer manufactures certain color blends that were popular in early-2010s Southern California installs. When a color is discontinued, we source same-specification aftermarket pavers from independent manufacturers that produce equivalent compression strengths, generally 8,000 psi or higher for driveway use. A quality aftermarket paver with matching dimensional tolerances will outperform a mismatched OEM paver from a different batch every time. Color variation between original and replacement is real; we set expectations on that before the first paver is removed.
Signs Your Tamko Driveway & Pavers Is Failing

- Repeated sand washout between joints after rain. Polymeric sand, used between driveway pavers, loses its binding ability when the base beneath it holds water. Los Angeles winters - short bursts of heavy rain followed by long dry spells - are harder on joint sand than the constant wetness of other climates. If joints keep hollowing out, the drainage plane under the pavers needs a look, not just a re-sand.
- A “lip” forming where the driveway meets the garage slab or street curb. Edge restraint failure. The metal or plastic edging that pins the outer pavers in place has shifted or rusted. Left alone, the outside rows of pavers begin to drift outward and the whole section loses interlock.
- Single pavers or small clusters rocking or rattling when stepped on. This is a bedding-layer void, usually from uneven compaction of the crushed stone base. Rocking pavers rarely break; they telegraph a base problem that will spread if the section keeps taking vehicle load.
- Shifting or settlement around a drain or utility line. Los Angeles driveways cross a lot of buried infrastructure - sewer laterals, irrigation sleeves, gas service lines. When a trench settles at a different rate than the surrounding base, the pavers above it follow. This is the one failure type that consistently worsens, because water finds the low spot and accelerates the cycle.
- Fading or surface spalling that exposes a lighter aggregate core. Tamko pavers are manufactured with a dense surface layer over a coarser body. Once the surface layer erodes, the paver absorbs more water and becomes more vulnerable to Los Angeles’s heat-cool cycles. Spalling is cosmetic at first, then structural - as the surface breaks down, load-bearing capacity drops with it.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
In Los Angeles, a Tamko-compatible localized paver repair - pulling and re-bedding a section, replacing failed edge restraint, re-sanding joints - runs $826 to $2,124 depending on square footage and base condition. Full paver driveway installation runs $8,260 to $21,240. The range is driven by three things: the size of the section, the depth of base repair required, and whether we’re matching existing color or installing new.
Every one of those numbers is a written price with a written scope before any work starts. That’s Clause 1 of The Haven Standard, and we’ve held to it since 2007. The written quote breaks out parts and labor separately, so you can see exactly what the Tamko-compatible materials cost and what the installation costs. No change proceeds without a signed change order. If we open the base and find it’s in worse shape than the quote assumed, you sign before we do the extra work - and our projects finish within a few percent of the agreed number, which is the point of the discipline. The work carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if it’s not done right, we make it right.
DIY or Call Us?

You can safely check the visible joints and edges yourself. If the polymeric sand has washed out and the pavers themselves are still firm, re-sanding is a maintenance item some Los Angeles homeowners handle on their own. What you should not do is pull pavers to inspect the base, because removing and resetting even one driveway paver changes the load path of the section around it - and a partially re-bedded paver becomes a trip edge and a future settlement point. Paver work is not dangerous the way high-tension springs are; what it is, is unforgiving. The base either carries load correctly or it doesn’t, and you won’t know which until the first heavy vehicle drives over it.
We’d rather walk the driveway with you and show you what’s underneath before we quote a repair. Call (470) 298-9650 and we’ll schedule a site visit, a written price, and a photo record of what we find - before anyone picks up a tool.
FAQs
A properly installed Tamko driveway paver with a compacted base should carry residential vehicle load for 25 to 30 years in Los Angeles’s climate before the surface layer needs replacement. The caveat is the base: pavers installed over a thin or poorly compacted aggregate layer can show settlement within five years, which is why we photograph the base and show it to you before we lay anything on top of it.
Yes, in most cases. We pull the affected section, inspect the base, re-compact and re-bed as needed, reset the pavers, restore edge restraint, and re-sand the joints. The catch is color matching: if your Tamko color was discontinued, we’ll source the closest same-spec pavers and tell you honestly what the color variation will look like before we start. Call (470) 298-9650 for a written repair estimate.
A typical localized repair - up to roughly 100 square feet - takes one day on site, plus a few hours for base compaction if the underlying aggregate needs rebuilding. Larger sections or full driveway work typically run three to five days. We’ll give you a written timeline as part of the quote, not a verbal estimate.
We stock the most common Tamko driveway and patio paver dimensions - 60mm and 80mm driveways, 30mm and 40mm patios - in the Los Angeles yard, along with edge restraint, polymeric sand, and base aggregate. Discontinued colors and less common sizes are sourced to match the original series code, which we verify from the paver you pull. We also stock parts for KraftMaid, Cambria, and Silestone across the other trades, which keeps scheduling simple for multi-trade projects.
