Unilock Bathroom Remodeling: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide

If you’re searching for Unilock bathroom remodeling in Los Angeles, you’re likely standing in a bathroom that has a problem: a failed paver floor, a cracked shower bench, or a wall veneer that never shed water the way it should have. A full Unilock-spec bathroom remodel in Los Angeles typically runs $10,620-$33,040 installed, and most of that range depends on whether we’re repairing surface damage or tearing out and rebuilding the wet-area substrate underneath. Rowan Construction Group stocks Unilock-compatible trim, edge restraints, and setting materials for bathroom applications, and we can usually diagnose the failure in a single visit.

What most owners discover is that the Unilock product itself didn’t fail first. What failed is the layer beneath it: the mud bed, the waterproofing membrane, or the slope that was supposed to carry water toward the drain. Unilock makes a durable paver and wall unit. But in a bathroom, it only performs as well as the prep work under it. That’s the conversation we end up having on most Los Angeles bathroom projects, and it’s the one that determines your real cost.

Which Unilock Models This Applies To

In a bathroom setting, we’re almost always working with Unilock’s thinner-profile paver lines and wall units rather than full-thickness driveway pavers. The products that show up in Los Angeles bathroom remodels include the U-Cara Multi-Face Wall System for accent walls and shower surrounds, Series 3000 pavers cut down for flooring, and occasionally Brussels Block or Richcliff units used as decorative borders or shower bench caps. Each one has different thickness tolerances, which matters when you’re matching a replacement unit to an existing installation that has settled.

Here’s the compatibility gotcha most owners don’t know: Unilock changes its paver dimensions by series and manufacturing run, so a Series 3000 paver purchased in 2018 may not match the same nominal size sold today within an eighth of an inch. In a driveway, that tolerance disappears. In a bathroom floor where joints are three to six times tighter, an eighth of an inch is visible, and it can throw off your entire layout. We measure the existing units on site before ordering replacements, and we check the current Unilock catalog specs against those measurements rather than trusting the box label. For wall units, the U-Cara system uses a tongue-and-groove channel on the back; aftermarket products that claim compatibility often don’t seat fully, which shows up as a visible lip within weeks.

On the OEM versus aftermarket question: for Unilock bathroom work, we use OEM units whenever the existing installation is exposed and the color match matters. Unilock’s color blending is consistent enough within a production run that OEM replacements blend invisibly. For areas hidden under a vanity or behind a toilet, a quality aftermarket unit can work, but we’ll tell you where we’re using it and why. We also stock edge restraints and grout-setting materials approved for wet-area use, because the plastic edge restraint that works on a patio fails quickly under a shower pan’s constant moisture.

Signs Your Unilock Bathroom Remodeling Is Failing

Signs Your Unilock Bathroom Remodeling Is Failing
  • Efflorescence on the paver surface. That white, chalky film means water is moving through the paver and evaporating on the surface, which in a bathroom means your waterproofing layer has a breach somewhere below. It’s not cosmetic. The water is traveling through the setting bed.
  • Loose or rocking pavers near the shower entry. The pavers are moving because the sand or mortar bed under them has eroded or washed out. In a bathroom, this usually traces back to a slope that doesn’t carry water to the drain quickly enough, so water pools at the entry threshold and works its way down.
  • A musty smell that won’t leave. That’s trapped moisture in the substrate or the wall cavity behind a U-Cara wall panel. The pavers or wall units look fine on top, but the cavity behind them has become a dark, humid space. In Los Angeles, where bathrooms ventilate less aggressively than in colder climates, this is a regular find.
  • Cracked or spalled units on the shower bench or curb. A cracked bench cap usually means the bench was built with wood framing below and no slope, so water sat on the cap and eventually froze or thermal-cycled the unit. Once one cap unit fails, the surrounding ones follow.
  • Discolored grout lines or missing joint sand that keeps washing out. In wet areas, polymeric sand is often used where it should never be. Water breaks it down, then the joints erode, then the pavers start shifting. If your joint sand is disappearing month over month, the fix isn’t more sand.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

In Los Angeles, Unilock bathroom remodeling projects break into two broad brackets. A surface repair that involves resetting loose pavers, re-sloping the shower pan, replacing worn joint material, and sealing runs $5,900-$10,620 depending on square footage and how many units need replacement. A full tear-out and rebuild of the wet area, including new waterproofing membrane, sloped mud bed, drain assembly, and new Unilock units installed to current spec, runs $10,620-$33,040. The high end of that range covers larger bathrooms where the shower surround, bench, and flooring are all being done together, plus cases where the subfloor has water damage and needs framing repair before any tile or paver goes back in.

Scope Los Angeles Installed Range
Surface repair: reset pavers, replace joint material, reseal $5,900-$10,620
Shower pan rebuild with Unilock-compatible materials $8,260-$14,160
Full bathroom remodel with Unilock surfaces $10,620-$33,040
U-Cara accent wall replacement (labor + OEM units) $2,360-$5,310

Every Rowan Construction Group quote is a flat, written price with a written scope and a written warranty, delivered before any work starts. Under Clause 1 of the Haven Standard, the price is written before anyone starts, and no change proceeds without a signed change order. That’s the reason our Los Angeles bathroom projects finish within a few percent of the number the customer agreed to. The workmanship warranty covers our installation, and the Unilock units carry their own manufacturer coverage for material defects.

What an owner can safely check: whether pavers rock underfoot, whether water pools near the drain after a shower, whether any joint material is visibly washing out. Mark the spots with painter’s tape, take photos, and that’s your diagnostic record. What owners should not do is start lifting pavers themselves. Once you pull a unit out of a bathroom floor or shower pan, you’ve broken the continuity of the waterproofing layer beneath it, and what you find underneath usually looks worse than what you saw on top. We’ve walked onto too many Los Angeles jobs where a homeowner lifted “one loose paver” and found a saturated mud bed or rotted subfloor, at which point the repair scope doubled. If the paver is moving, the failure is beneath it. That’s a trained-professional fix, not a weekend project.
