Techo-Bloc Bathroom Remodeling: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide

Bathroom remodeling with Techo-Bloc products in Los Angeles typically runs $10,620 to $33,040, and the work can usually start within two to three weeks of your written estimate. Most owners call us after noticing water staining at the base of a Techo-Bloc shower surround, cracking along a paver accent wall, or grout failure where the hardscape meets wet-zone surfaces. You have a premium product and you want the replacement or remodel done without tearing out everything around it. That is exactly the job we take on.

Techo-Bloc is known for exterior hardscape, but we regularly see interior bathrooms where owners have used their wall blocks, stone veneer, and paving products as shower surrounds, accent walls, vanity backsplashes, and flooring. When those materials fail in a wet environment, the fix is rarely as simple as swapping one tile. The difference between a clean repair and a full remodel comes down to what is behind the surface, and that is what we document in writing before any work starts. Grant Rowan has spent the better part of two decades working on structural remodels across Los Angeles County, and bathroom projects are where we most often find what the last installer left behind.

Which Techo-Bloc Models This Applies To

Techo-Bloc’s product line splits into several families, and the compatibility question depends on which one your bathroom uses. The Semma wall system, the Blu 60 and Blu 80 paver lines, and the Graphix and Mista wall collections are the ones we see in Los Angeles bathrooms most often. Each uses a different dimensional profile, joint width, and installation method, which means the replacement part has to match not just the color run but the series spec.

Here is the compatibility gotcha most owners hit: Techo-Bloc color batches shift between production runs. A Shale Grey paver from 2018 and a Shale Grey paver from 2024 will be close but not identical, and in a bathroom with hard overhead light and water magnifying the surface, that difference shows. If you have a few spares stacked in the garage, we can match from those and keep the repair seamless. If you do not, we will pull the current production samples and put the two side by side before ordering anything.

On the OEM versus aftermarket question: for Techo-Bloc, we recommend OEM. The manufacturer’s tolerances on thickness and edge chamfer are tighter than most aftermarket equivalents, and when a piece sits inside a shower where water pools, an eighth-inch variance is a leak path. We do stock common aftermarket trims and sealants that work across multiple paver systems, but for the paver or block itself, we order Techo-Bloc. Rowan Construction Group is an independent contractor and not affiliated with Techo-Bloc, but we have been specifying their materials long enough to know when a substitute will fail.

Signs Your Techo-Bloc Bathroom Remodeling Is Failing

The failures we see in Los Angeles follow a pattern, and the cause is almost always water meeting installation shortcuts. Here is what to look for:

  • Efflorescence blooming across the surface. White chalky deposits mean water is moving through the block or paver and evaporating on the face. In a bathroom, that tells us the waterproofing membrane behind the Techo-Bloc was never installed correctly or has failed. The surface symptom is cosmetic; the cause is structural.
  • Grout crumbling at the floor-to-wall joint. Techo-Bloc pavers and blocks expand and contract differently than ceramic tile. If the installer grouted the corner joints instead of caulking the change of plane, the grout will crack within a year. Los Angeles humidity swings, especially in coastal neighborhoods like Playa del Rey and Long Beach, accelerate this.
  • Loose or hollow-sounding pieces. Tap the surface. A hollow sound means the mortar bed has lost bond, usually because the substrate behind the Techo-Bloc got wet and swelled. This is the stage before a piece falls off completely.
  • Dark staining at the base of the shower or tub surround. That is water wicking up from the floor. It means the drainage plane is not working, and by the time the stain shows on the surface, the framing behind it has already been wet for months. In Los Angeles, our mild winters mean mold growth happens slower than in humid climates, but it happens all the same.
  • Rust-colored streaks from the paver surface. Techo-Bloc pavers contain iron oxide in the color mix. When acidic cleaners or hard water sit on the surface, the iron can oxidize and streak. The fix is a pH-neutral cleaner and resealing, not replacement, unless the staining has penetrated deep into the block.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

A full Techo-Bloc bathroom remodel in Los Angeles runs $10,620 to $33,040, which includes demolition, waterproofing, new Techo-Bloc material, installation, and finish work. Smaller scopes, like a shower surround replacement, start around $5,310 to $14,160. If you are only replacing a failed section of paver flooring, expect $2,360 to $7,670 depending on square footage and whether the substrate needs repair.

What drives the range is the condition of what is underneath. If the waterproofing and framing are intact, we surface-mount new material and the price lands on the low end. If we find rotted studs or a failed pan, the scope grows and so does the number, but not without a signed change order first. That is the discipline that has kept our projects within a few percent of the agreed cost across 4,000-plus jobs since 2007. Every quote is a written flat price with a written scope and a written warranty. We do not do verbal estimates, and we do not start work until you have the number in your hands.

Under Clause 1 of the Haven Standard, the price is written before anyone starts. The 365-Day Done Right Promise applies to every bathroom project we finish: if it is not done right, we make it right. You also get a documented photo record of every visit, included as standard, so you can see what we found under the old work and what we left behind.

If you are comfortable with basic checks, you can do a visual inspection: look for hollow spots, check for cracked grout at the corners, and photograph any staining so you can track whether it spreads. That gives us useful information before we arrive and costs you nothing but ten minutes.

What you should not do is tear out Techo-Bloc pieces to see what is behind them. If the waterproofing is compromised, pulling one block can release a pocket of trapped water into the wall cavity and turn a repair into a gut. Water damage behind a shower surround is not a cosmetic fix, and in a house built before modern code, the framing could already be compromised. The tools to do this right, wet saws with proper blades, polymer-modified thinset, and a working knowledge of waterproofing systems, are not worth buying for one job. Call (470) 298-9650 and we will put eyes on it, document what we find, and give you a written price before any work begins.
