Ameristar Windows & Doors: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide
We stock, source, and install Ameristar-compatible window and door parts across Los Angeles, with most sash balances, rollers, hinges, and weatherstripping jobs running $150 to $450 installed per window or door. If you’re dealing with a window that won’t stay up or a patio door that grinds on its track, you’re in the right place. Ameristar products are common in LA homes built or renovated since the early 2000s, and we see the same failure patterns week after week: worn balances, cracked corner seals, and rollers that have given up after a decade of daily use in a dry, dusty climate.
Most owners discover the failure the same way. You open the window on a cool evening, it slams shut instead of holding. Or the sliding door that used to glide one-handed now takes both hands and a hip check. Maybe you noticed a draft that wasn’t there last winter, or condensation between the glass panes that will not wipe off. That is not a cleaning problem. That is a failed seal, and it means the insulated glass unit has lost its argon fill. The good news: none of these are reasons to replace the entire window or door, and none of them require waiting weeks for a specialty supplier.
Rowan Construction Group is an independent contractor. We are not affiliated with Ameristar, and we do not pretend to be. What we do is carry and order Ameristar-spec parts, match them to your model, and put them in correctly.
Which Ameristar Models This Applies To
Ameristar has produced several residential lines over the years, and the parts differ more than you would think. The most common in Los Angeles are the Ameristar 2000 and 3000 single-hung and double-hung vinyl windows, the Ameristar sliding patio door line, and a smaller volume of Ameristar casement and picture windows. Here is the compatibility gotcha: the balance system changed between production runs. Early 2000s units used a block-and-tackle balance with a 5/8-inch channel. Later runs moved to a constant-force coil balance system. If you order the wrong one, the window will not operate correctly no matter how carefully you install it.
The fastest way to identify your unit is to look at the metal or vinyl spacer between the glass panes. Ameristar stamps its name and a manufacturing date there on most units produced after 2005. If you cannot find a stamp, take one measurement: the visible glass width and height, rounded to the nearest 1/8 inch. That gives us the size, and from there we can determine the series by the frame profile and balance type.
On the OEM versus aftermarket question: for balances, rollers, and hinges, we generally recommend OEM-spec parts. The tolerances on Ameristar frames are tight, and a generic aftermarket balance rarely lasts more than two or three years in Los Angeles heat. For weatherstripping, aftermarket equivalents from SWISCO and Prime-Line perform fine and often cost 30 to 40 percent less. We will show you both prices and let you choose.
Signs Your Ameristar Windows & Doors Is Failing

- The window will not stay open, or drops slowly. The spring or coil inside the balance has lost tension. On double-hung windows, this is almost always the top sash first, because it gets opened less and the lubricant dries out.
- You have to lift or push down on the door to lock it. The rollers have worn flat on one side, or the track has sagged. In Los Angeles, fine dust works its way into the roller bearings and accelerates wear. A door that drags is a roller problem; a door that locks badly may also have a misaligned strike plate.
- Fog or moisture between the glass panes. The seal on the insulated glass unit has failed. The argon gas has escaped and been replaced by humid outside air. This is not repairable from the outside; the glass unit gets replaced, not the whole window.
- Drafts around the sash edges, even when closed. The weatherstripping has compressed or cracked. Vinyl weatherstripping hardens in sustained sun exposure, which LA windows get plenty of on south and west walls. On Ameristar windows, the interlocking meeting rail seal is the usual culprit.
- The window is hard to open or makes a grinding sound. The pivot bar or shoe inside the balance channel has worn or snapped. You may also see a small plastic piece fall out of the side channel when this happens. That is the balance shoe, and it is the most common Ameristar failure we replace on service calls.
Before
AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
For Ameristar-specific parts in Los Angeles, here is what you should expect to pay, installed:
- Balance replacement (one sash): $120-$240 per window
- Patio door roller replacement: $180-$320 per door panel
- Weatherstripping replacement (one window or door): $90-$210 per unit
- Insulated glass unit replacement: $250-$600 per sash, depending on glass size and low-E coating
- Complete window replacement (Ameristar-compatible): $5,310-$17,700, in line with our broader window replacement pricing for Los Angeles
The range reflects two things: which series you have and whether we need to order the part or already have it on the truck. Balances and rollers for Ameristar 2000 and 3000 series are common enough that our techs usually have them on hand for the first visit. Casement window hinges and older 2000-series parts sometimes require a two-to-three-day order from a regional supplier, which we will tell you before we schedule.
Every quote is a written flat price under Clause 1 of The Haven Standard: the number is on the page before we start, and it does not move unless you approve a written change order. You also get the documented photo record of the visit, showing the failed part and the installed replacement. That is standard, not an upgrade.
DIY or Call Us?

There is one thing every homeowner should check first: the window or door’s track and side channels. Dirt, pet hair, and LA dust accumulate there and cause binding that mimics a part failure. Vacuum the track, wipe the channels, and try the window again. If it still sticks or drops, the part has actually failed.
From there, I will be honest about the risk split. Weatherstripping is a straightforward job for a careful owner; the old strip peels out and the new one presses in. Balances and rollers are another story. The balance on an Ameristar double-hung window is under constant spring tension. If you remove the sash incorrectly, the spring can unload against your hand or face. Patio door panels are heavy, 60 to 90 pounds, and a mid-removal slip turns a $200 roller job into a broken glass panel. For anything involving spring tension or hoisting a door panel, call us at (470) 298-9650. We will send a uniformed tech with the right part and the right tools, and you will know the price before the work begins.
FAQs
Ameristar windows and doors typically last 20 to 30 years in Los Angeles, but the moving parts fail earlier: balances at 8 to 15 years, patio door rollers at 10 to 12 years, and weatherstripping at 5 to 8 years depending on sun exposure. Replacing the worn part extends the unit’s life without replacing the whole window. Call (470) 298-9650 for an exact quote if you are unsure what has failed.
Most Ameristar failures are replacement jobs, not repair jobs. A worn balance shoe, a flat roller, or cracked weatherstripping cannot be rehabilitated, and attempting to lubricate or shim them buys you weeks, not years. Replacement parts are inexpensive relative to the labor, and a new part restores the window to original operation. We will tell you if a repair is actually possible; most of the time, replacement is cheaper than the second service call.
A balance or roller replacement on one window or door typically takes 45 to 90 minutes on site. Weatherstripping takes 30 to 45 minutes per unit. Insulated glass unit replacement takes 1 to 2 hours, plus the time to order the custom-size panel if we don’t have it in stock. When we quote the job, we will tell you the total time before the crew arrives.
We stock the most common Ameristar 2000 and 3000 series balances, rollers, pivot bars, and weatherstripping on our Los Angeles service vehicles. Less common parts, including casement hinges and specialty glazing, are ordered from regional distributors and arrive within two to three days. We will tell you at the quote stage whether the part is on the truck or needs ordering, so there are no surprises.
We also stock parts for KraftMaid, Cambria, and Silestone for our kitchen and bath work, but this page is about Ameristar. If you need a part matched and priced, call (470) 298-9650 and describe the symptom. We will walk you through what to check, what we carry, and what the written price will be before anyone shows up.
