Sakrete Driveway & Pavers: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide

Sakrete driveway and paver installation in Los Angeles typically runs $8,260-$21,240 for a full paver driveway, while concrete driveway work using Sakrete bagged mixes lands between $5,310 and $14,160 installed. We stock Sakrete-compatible materials and install them regularly, usually completing a standard residential driveway replacement in 4 to 7 working days once demolition starts. Most Los Angeles homeowners discover a problem the same way: a paver sinks or shifts after winter rain, a concrete slab develops a crack that widens through spring, or the surface starts spalling, leaving a dusty, pitted finish that no sealer will fix. The failure is rarely the Sakrete product itself. It’s almost always what sits underneath it.

Which Sakrete Models This Applies To

Sakrete isn’t a single product line. For driveways and pavers, you’re working with one of three product families: Sakrete High-Strength Concrete Mix (the 4000 PSI bagged mix, which carries a PSI rating printed on the bag and cures to structural strength in 28 days), Sakrete Flo-Coat Concrete Resurfacer (for topping spalled or pitted slabs in a 1/4-inch to 1/2-inch layer), or Sakrete paver base and bedding sand products used under interlocking concrete pavers. The compatibility gotcha most owners miss: Sakrete High-Strength Concrete Mix is not a resurfacing product. If your existing slab is sound but the surface is failing, Flo-Coat is the right material. If the slab is cracked through, no bagged mix fixes it, you need full or partial removal and repour.

On the OEM versus aftermarket question: Sakrete doesn’t make a proprietary “part” the way a window manufacturer makes a sash or a faucet maker makes a cartridge. What matters is the mix spec. When we write a scope for a Los Angeles driveway, we specify the PSI rating, slump, and aggregate size, not just “concrete.” A 4000 PSI mix with 3/4-inch aggregate handles vehicle loads fine. A 3000 PSI general-purpose mix does not. We stock Sakrete High-Strength, Flo-Coat, and polymeric paver sand on the truck for nearly every driveway job, because material shortages in LA are a scheduling killer and having it on hand keeps the four-day clock honest. We’re an independent contractor, not a Sakrete affiliate, so we match the product to the site conditions rather than pushing one SKU.

Signs Your Sakrete Driveway & Pavers Is Failing

Signs Your Sakrete Driveway & Pavers Is Failing
  • Settling pavers or sunken edges. This is a base failure, not a paver failure. Water has moved the bedding sand or the compacted base wasn’t thick enough for Los Angeles’ clay-heavy soils, which expand and contract through wet and dry seasons. The fix is lifting the affected area, re-compacting, and re-setting the pavers, not adding more sand on top.
  • Cracks wider than 1/8 inch in a concrete slab. Hairline cracks are cosmetic and sealable. Cracks with vertical displacement or widening over time mean the subgrade is moving, and in Los Angeles that usually traces to expansive soil, tree roots, or a water leak under the slab. Patching the surface without addressing the movement will split again within a season or two.
  • Surface spalling or scaling. This shows up as a rough, pitted surface where aggregate is exposed. In LA, the usual cause is water intrusion into the slab surface followed by temperature cycling, or the original mix had too much water added at pour. Flo-Coat resurfacing works if the damage is surface-deep; if the spalling is deep or the slab is crumbling, replacement is the honest call.
  • Paver joint sand washing out. If you see sand accumulating at the bottom of your driveway after rain, the joints are losing their filler. Once joints go empty, pavers start shifting. Polymeric sand, which hardens after wetting, is the correct replacement for standard sand, and it’s what we spec on every LA paver job because our winter rains test joints harder than most climates.
  • Staining that won’t come out. Oil, rust, or leaf-tannin stains that resist pressure washing usually mean the sealer has worn away and the concrete absorbed the contaminant. A quality penetrating sealer re-applied every 3 to 5 years is the low-cost fix; ignoring it shortens the slab’s useful life in Los Angeles’ UV-heavy sun.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

For a standard two-car driveway in Los Angeles, here’s where the numbers land:

  • Concrete driveway (Sakrete High-Strength, 4000 PSI): $5,310-$14,160 installed, including demolition, haul-off, base prep, forms, pour, finish, and a written warranty on the work.
  • Paver driveway (interlocking concrete pavers over compacted base): $8,260-$21,240 installed, including excavation, base and bedding layers, paver setting, polymeric sand joints, and edge restraints.
  • Concrete resurfacing (Flo-Coat over sound slab): typically ranges $2,360-$5,900 for a two-car driveway, but this only applies when the existing slab is structurally intact. We inspect and tell you if resurfacing will last or if you’re paying twice.
  • Driveway sealing or joint re-sanding: $295-$825 for most residential driveways, depending on square footage and prep.

What drives the range: driveway square footage, slope, access for the concrete truck or paver delivery, soil conditions found during excavation, and whether Los Angeles code requires a new apron at the sidewalk or curb. Our price is written before anyone picks up a tool, per Clause 1 of the Haven Standard, and no change proceeds without your signature on a change order. You get a flat written price with a written scope and written warranty, plus a documented photo record on every visit so you can see exactly what was found under the old surface.

You can safely do the diagnostic work: check for cracks with vertical displacement, run water over the surface to see where it pools, measure joint gaps in pavers, and mark the spots that have settled. What you shouldn’t do is attempt a structural repair with bagged patching compound and hope. A Los Angeles driveway carries two to four tons of vehicle weight every day, and the failure point is almost always six to twelve inches below the surface where you can’t see it. Concrete demo and re-pour requires proper base compaction, form work, and finishing within the mix’s working time. Getting that wrong means paying twice. If you want a professional opinion before committing, call (470) 298-9650 and we’ll inspect the driveway and give you a written price, not a ballpark.
