Sterling Fence Installation: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide
If your Sterling fence has a failed section, a sagging gate, or posts that have started leaning after a wet winter, here’s the direct answer: a full Sterling-compatible fence installation in Los Angeles runs $4,130 to $10,620 depending on linear footage, post setting depth, and whether we’re replacing the entire run or matching into existing sections. We stock Sterling-style pickets, rails, and post caps on our trucks, and most straight-section replacements install same-day once we’re on site. What owners usually notice first is a gate that drags or a post that’s no longer plumb, and by that point the fasteners or the post footing have usually been failing quietly for months.
Under Clause 1 of The Haven Standard, you get a written price before any work starts. Not a phone estimate, not a ballpark. A line-item price with a written scope and a written warranty. That’s the Rowan Construction Group way across all seven trades we run in Los Angeles.
Which Sterling Models This Applies To
Sterling fence product lines vary by era, and that matters when you’re matching a replacement section. The common lines we work with across Los Angeles are the Sterling Estate series (heavier-gauge aluminum, typically 0.062″ wall thickness on the posts) and the Sterling Classic series, which uses a thinner extrusion and a narrower picket profile. If your fence was installed before roughly 2012, you’re likely looking at Classic. After that, Estate became the default for most Los Angeles suppliers. The metal gauge and post dimension are different enough that a Classic picket will not seat cleanly in an Estate rail channel.
Here’s the checkable gotcha: measure the post. Estate posts run 2.5″ square; Classic posts run 2″ square. That single measurement tells us which line you have, and it tells us whether we’re matching OEM Sterling components or fabricating a compatible section. Rowan Construction Group is an independent contractor, not a Sterling dealer or affiliate. We stock genuine Sterling hardware when it’s available from regional Los Angeles distributors, and we stock a quality compatible line when OEM lead times run long. Both options appear on the written quote as separate line items so you decide with real numbers in front of you.
Signs Your Sterling Fence Installation Is Failing

- Gate drags or won’t latch. The hinge post has shifted out of plumb, usually because the concrete footing was poured too shallow for Los Angeles expansive soil. When clay soil swells after rain, it pushes posts. A dragging gate is the first visible symptom.
- Pickets rattle in the rail channel. The internal aluminum clips or screws have corroded or backed out. This is more common on coastal-adjacent Los Angeles neighborhoods like Playa del Rey or San Pedro where salt air accelerates metal fatigue.
- Post leans at the base but the panel is straight. This is a footing failure, not a fence failure. In Los Angeles, the standard fix is removing the post, drilling a deeper footing (24″ to 36″ depending on soil), and re-setting with proper drainage gravel at the base.
- White chalky residue on aluminum. That’s oxidation from the paint layer failing. It’s cosmetic at first, but once the coating is compromised on a Los Angeles hillside with morning marine layer moisture, the aluminum underneath starts pitting within two to three seasons.
- Fence section sways with modest wind. The rail-to-post brackets have loosened or the post spacing was too wide at original install. Sterling specs call for posts no more than 6′ on center for Estate line. Wider spacing voids the structural integrity and creates a sail effect in Santa Ana winds.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
In Los Angeles, a Sterling-compatible fence installation runs $4,130 to $10,620. The spread comes down to four factors: linear footage (most LA lots run 60 to 150 feet of fence), whether existing posts can be reused or need re-setting, gate count and hardware condition, and whether the existing concrete footings need demolition. A 60-foot straight run with a single gate and reusable posts lands at the lower end. A 150-foot run with two gates, failing footings throughout, and a hillside slope that requires stepped panels lands at the higher end.
Every quote includes the same line items: removal and haul-off of the failed section, new Sterling or compatible panels (specified by series and gauge), post re-setting with proper gravel drainage, post caps, fasteners, and a written workmanship warranty. If we run into a footing problem we couldn’t see on the walk-through, nothing changes until we hand you a signed change order. That discipline is why our 4,000-plus projects across Los Angeles County finish within a few percent of the written number. The 365-Day Done Right Promise backs every fence we install: if it’s not done right, we make it right.
DIY or Call Us?

You can safely diagnose. You should not DIY this repair. Aluminum fence work looks simple until you’re drilling into an old footing with a fence section hanging off-kilter. The injury risk comes from the section itself: a 6-foot by 8-foot aluminum panel weighs 60 to 90 pounds and acts like a lever arm the moment you loosen a bracket. On a Los Angeles hillside, that lever arm meets gravity and wins. We’ve repaired several homeowner attempts where a panel came down on a wrist or a drilled post hit an irrigation line that was never marked.
What you can do before we arrive: photograph the failed section, measure the post width (2″ is Classic, 2.5″ is Estate), and check whether the gate still closes. That’s three pieces of information. Send them over or tell us on the phone, and we’ll bring the right parts on the first visit. Call (470) 298-9650 and we’ll walk through what you’re seeing. The estimate is free, and it’s in writing before anyone picks up a tool.
FAQs
An Estate-series Sterling aluminum fence, properly installed with 30-inch post footings and drainage gravel, lasts 25 to 35 years in Los Angeles before the paint coating fails. Classic series runs 15 to 20 years because the thinner extrusion and lighter coating degrade faster, especially within five miles of the coast.
Yes, if the post itself isn’t bent or corroded. We can remove the post, re-set it in a deeper footing with proper drainage, and rehang the existing panel. If the post has a visible bend or the base shows pitting, replacement is more honest. We’ll tell you which one applies to your fence, with photos. Call (470) 298-9650 to schedule a look.
A straight-run section replacement with reusable posts takes one day for most Los Angeles lots. If footings need demolition and re-pour, add a day for concrete cure before we rehang panels. We’ll put that timeline on your written quote so you know before we start.
Yes. We carry Sterling-compatible pickets, rails, brackets, post caps, and gate hardware on every fence call. For OEM Sterling-specific parts with unusual dimensions, we source from Los Angeles distributors, and we’ll show you the lead time and the compatible alternative side by side on the written estimate.
