Unilock Driveway & Pavers: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide

Unilock paver driveway and paver patio work in Los Angeles runs $8,260 to $21,240 installed, with most single-driveway replacements landing between $11,000 and $16,500 depending on square footage, base depth, and whether we’re salvaging existing pavers. We stock Unilock-compatible edge restraints, bedding sand, jointing compound, and replacement pavers on our trucks for same-week service calls. Most owners discover a paver failure the way you’d expect: a paver rocks underfoot after rain, a row shifts against the curb, or the edge row starts creeping outward into the lawn.

We’re an independent Los Angeles contractor, not a Unilock dealer or affiliate. That matters because our recommendation is based on what holds up in this climate and soil, not on moving a specific product line.

Which Unilock Models This Applies To

Unilock paver lines installed across Los Angeles driveways and patios include the Brussels Block, Courtstone, Thornbury, Richcliff, and the more recent Beacon Hill and Artline series. The compatibility question that trips up most owners is thickness: Unilock driveway pavers are 60mm or 80mm thick, while patio pavers run 50mm to 60mm. You cannot swap a patio paver into a driveway section without the surface failing under vehicle load within two to three seasons. That’s checkable on the underside of any lifted paver: the millimeter stamp is molded into the concrete, along with the series name and a plant code.

For replacement pavers, OEM Unilock is the cleanest match for color and texture. But Unilock cycles color blends roughly every four to six years, which means a 2018 driveway in the Brussels Block Sierra blend may not have an exact factory match today. A quality aftermarket equivalent from a southern California manufacturer will match the dimensional spec but will have slight color drift. We’ll bring both options to a job site and lay them side by side so you can see the difference in full sun before we commit.

Signs Your Unilock Driveway & Pavers Is Failing

Signs Your Unilock Driveway & Pavers Is Failing
  • Rocking or rattling pavers underfoot or under tire. The bedding sand layer has washed out or compacted unevenly, usually because an edge restraint has failed somewhere along the perimeter. Once one edge lets go, the whole field starts working loose from the outside in.
  • Edge rows separating or spilling into the lawn or planter bed. In Los Angeles clay soil, the freeze-thaw cycle is not the culprit. The culprit is irrigation overspray softening the soil under the edge restraint, plus root pressure from nearby trees. Each loose edge paver accelerates the next one.
  • Low spots that hold water for more than 48 hours after rain. This means the compacted base has settled or eroded underneath. It’s not cosmetic. Standing water on a paver surface seeps into the joints and washes out the jointing sand, which is what keeps individual pavers from shifting.
  • Weeds sprouting in the joints within weeks of cleaning. The jointing compound has failed. Los Angeles weather cycles between wet winters and long dry heat, and once the polymeric sand breaks down, the joints become seed traps. Pulling weeds by hand disturbs what’s left of the jointing compound.
  • Fading, chalking, or spalling on the paver surface. Unilock pavers are manufactured with a color-fast face, but a decade of direct Los Angeles sun plus aggressive pressure washing will etch the surface. Spalling, where the top face flakes off in thin sheets, is not repairable at the individual paver level; those pavers get replaced.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

For Los Angeles homeowners, Unilock paver driveway installation runs $8,260 to $21,240. A partial repair, where we lift a failed section, re-grade the base, and reset the existing pavers with new bedding sand and jointing compound, falls between $1,200 and $4,500 depending on the square footage and how deep the base problem goes. A full paver patio installation in the Los Angeles market lands at $4,130 to $12,980.

What drives the range is base depth. Driveway pavers over a proper compacted aggregate base rated for vehicle loads need 4 to 6 inches of base under 1 inch of bedding sand. Patio pavers need 4 inches. The price also shifts on whether the old pavers are salvageable. If the paver itself is sound and only the base or edge restraint failed, we reset the original material and you pay for labor and new base material, not new pavers.

Every quote from Rowan Construction Group is a written flat price with a written scope and a written warranty, delivered before any work starts. Under Clause 1 of the Haven Standard, the price is on paper before anyone picks up a tool. Under our 365-Day Done Right Promise, if the repair is not done right, we make it right, and that guarantee is printed on the page, not tucked behind an asterisk. We carry a documented photo record of every visit as a standard deliverable, so you leave the job with evidence of what was found and what was done.

DIY or Call Us?

Paver work is one of the few driveway categories where a careful owner can make a real repair without special tools. You can lift a single rocking paver, check the millimeter stamp on the underside, add bedding sand, and reset it. That’s a legitimate Saturday project. You can also re-apply polymeric jointing sand to a small patio. What’s not safe or reasonable to DIY is any section wider than a single paver row. Once a field of pavers has shifted, the base has almost certainly settled or eroded, and resetting pavers on a failing base just moves the problem six months down the line.

The other line we’d draw is edge restraint. If your edge row has separated at the curb or the lawn line, the restraint system has failed. Rebuilding that properly means cutting back the soil, resetting the restraint spike, and compacting the base at the perimeter. Get it wrong and the whole driveway will creep again inside a year. For a repair that holds, call us at (470) 298-9650 and we’ll bring the right base material, the right restraint, and the right pavers on the first trip.
